Handling money wisely during your trip can help you avoid stress and enjoy Tunisia with confidence. Here’s what you need to know before you go.
What Currency Is Used in Tunisia?
The official currency in Tunisia is the Tunisian Dinar (TND). It’s a closed currency, meaning you can’t get it in most countries before arrival. We recommend exchanging money or withdrawing cash once you’re in Tunisia.
💡 Note: It is illegal to take Tunisian Dinar in or out of the country.
Where to Exchange Money?
You can exchange foreign currency at:
Banks
Airport exchange counters
Official exchange offices
Some hotels (at slightly higher rates)
Always ask for a receipt when exchanging money.
Can I Use Credit Cards in Tunisia?
Credit and debit cards are generally accepted in Tunis and other major cities — especially at international hotels, upscale restaurants, and larger shops.
However, technical issues or card terminal outages can happen unexpectedly. That’s why it’s strongly recommended to always carry enough cash on hand, even in urban areas, to avoid disruptions during your trip.
Should I Carry Cash?
Yes. Cash is essential for:
Small purchases
Tipping guides or drivers
Shopping in souks and local markets
Paying in rural areas
ATMs are available in most cities and tourist areas. Be sure to notify your bank before traveling and check for any international withdrawal fees.
